We have built a very basic prototype of the heart rate monitor which uses an infared LED and a phototransistor to measure the blood pulses in the finger, at the moment we have this feeding to processing which displays a graph of the heart rate. 
Some things we still need to add are; an LCD screen to display the time/reading, a battery to power the device (to get rid of the USB cable) and a better way to hold the components on your finger.
