A few concepts

I've made a few mockup screenshots of the game we intend on making. the player will be traveling through time, trying to achieve high status in each time period and seeing how status has changed through history.

One of the example time periods was in Sparta (400 b.c.) where high status was simple, all it meant was being able to fight.

This is the first mock-up I made:
This particular stage would be like a fighter game, as the player needs to defeat all the enemies then would be praised by the other warriors. The art style on this example is sort of our usual style, but it could still work.

This is the second mock-up:
With this one I was going for a much more abstract style. The players are all grey blobs and must collect some sort of yellow energy balls to make their colour more yellow. The yellower the character, the higher status they have in this universe.

I'm not sure if this concept is too simple but after James asked us what the difference is between an art game and an educational game, It was difficult to say that the first concept wasn't an educational game, This isn't particularly a bad thing though. This abstract concept would also work, being more of an art game. there are no historical references so the player could be exploring a completely new world, helping to portray our message better.

Another idea is to use RPG Maker VX which would possibly allow us to make the game faster in the limited time we have.
And then we could focus more on the gameplay/story and the meaning of the game.

One last concept:
This game would play like an adventure platformer with lots of places to explore and activities to complete, resulting in increased status for the character. Some of the platforms would be raised so the player can venture in all 4 directions giving the freedom of exploration.
